The demand from Wickersley grindstones stems from the fact that the stone was a very rare type of hard and soft sandstone. Both these types were ideal for grinding the edge of steel tools and didn’t burn the metal in the process of being ground. It could be said that they played a part in the successful manufacture of steel tools in the Sheffield area.

In this way the quarrying industry in Wickersley was an important part of life for Wickersley residents for 200 years from the beginning of the eighteenth century. At the height of industry more than half the inhabitants were employed as stone masons and stones were exported to the four corners of the British empire. To read more, click here
